Weatherford’s Mach 1 Track Club qualified a record 34 athletes to regionals over the weekend during the Southwestern Association Junior Olympic Championship Meet at Springtown’s Porcupine Stadium.

Weatherford’s Mach 1 Track Club competed in the Southwestern Association Junior Olympic Championship Meet at Springtown’s Porcupine Stadium over the weekend, qualifying a record 34 athletes to regionals, set for the week of July 9 at Fort Worth’s Herman Clark Stadium.

The club’s strong showing in Springtown was a source of pride for Mach 1 Head Coach Lupe Torres, who said the group’s runners consistently give their best effort both in practice as well as at meets.

“It’s just unbelievable,” Torres said.

“These kids show up to practice and work really hard. It goes back to the old saying, hard work pays off.”

The club now must work through a quick turnaround, with regionals less than a month out.

Torres said the competition will be tough, while at the same time stressing that Mach 1’s regional qualifiers are up to the challenge.

“We have two weeks to get ready,” Torres said.

“Regionals are going to consist of basically the whole state of Texas. They took the top eight [last weekend]. They take the top five at regionals to go to nationals. Our goal is to get as many as we can. We might have a new record [in terms of] taking kids to the junior Olympics this year.”
