The Millsap Bulldogs (1-0) successfully avenged the team’s 2018 opening week, 26-25 loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs with a 20-7 win over the same team Friday at home.
Millsap’s defense provided a number of big plays for the team, collecting four sacks (two by junior Juble Stevens, as well as one apiece by junior Wes Rogers and senior Hunter Matthews), an interception (junior JW Holcomb) and a pair of fumble recoveries (Stevens and senior Dayson Benfer).
Holcomb and senior Casey Waller led the (Millsap) Bulldogs in tackles, each picking up seven.
Benfer added six tackles.
Head Coach Jake Johnson said his team's defensive unit played with great intensity from start to finish.
"Anytime you can hold a team to a single-digit score, it is exceptional," Johnson said.
"Our guys were flying around and playing with passion. That is what we ask them to do and they answered the call."
Millsap made the most of its defense’s strong play, putting up 154 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.
Senior quarterback Jace Davis (who also went 11-of-20 for 103 yards in the passing game) led the way with 81 rushing yards and a score on 16 carries, while teammate Waylan Dunn, a sophomore, added 55 yards on 10 carries.
Millsap junior Nathan Sykes led the team’s receiving core with 69 yards on four receptions.
In all, Millsap accrued 257 yards of offense.
The Bulldogs play the Callisburg Wildcats in a non-district game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wildcat Stadium.
Last season, Millsap defeated Callisburg, 36-15 in week two.
