Weatherford High School’s varsity boys’ soccer team battled back from an early 2-0 deficit versus the Abilene Eagles Tuesday night at home, but were unable to stymie a late surge by the visiting team, which came away with a 5-2 District 3-6A match.

Trailing by the same 2-0 mark at the half, Weatherford tied the match up thanks to goals from Ebake Saidi and Miguel Villanueva.

Abilene recaptured the lead with 15 minutes remaining in regulation, before cementing the win with an additional two scores during the final 10 minutes.

The Kangaroos play the Richland Rebels in a district match at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the road.

Lady Roos edged by Lady Eagles

The Weatherford Lady Roos’ varsity soccer team refused to go quietly versus the Abilene Lady Eagles in the teams’ District 3-6A match Tuesday night, erasing deficits of 1-0 and later 3-1, before ultimately falling in the eighth round of penalty kicks.

Trailing early by one score, Weatherford got a goal from Yessica Martinez, who came in off the bench and scored on a corner by teammate Hailey Maloy.

After the Lady Eagles rallied back with a pair of goals to retake the lead, 3-1 in the second half, the Lady Roos once again answered, this time courtesy of Aubree McCue, who scored on a set piece from Maloy with eight minutes left in regulation.

Weatherford subsequently tied the match up three minutes later on a cross from Bailey Beckner to McCue.

Still tied at 3-3, the teams went to penalty kicks, going eight  shooters deep, before Abilene clinched the win.

The Lady Roos host the Richland Lady Rebels in a district match at 7 p.m. Friday.
