Weatherford High School’s cross country team had a busy weekend, with runners taking part in both the Southlake Carroll Invitational and the Parker County XC Championships at Weatherford’s Canyon West Golf Course.

In the Southlake Carroll meet, Weatherford’s girls finished 15th out of 34 qualifying teams.

The Lady Roos’ individual results are:

(Girls’ 5000M Elite Division)

• Sadie Carey, seventh with a time of 18:57.42

• Olivia Christmas, 33rd with a time of 19:49.15

• Ella Pando, 37th with a time of 19:52.04

• Ashley Carlisle, 187th with a time of 22:33.90

• Diana Antonio, 190th with a time of 22:37.75

• Elaine Scott, 212th with a time of 23:35.24

• Emma Marsch, 215th with a time of 23:43.81.

Weatherford Head Cross Country Coach Ty Comstock said the Lady Roos have put in the necessary work over the summer to have a successful season.

“The girls’ team is running really strong at this point,” Comstock said.

“They have been running together since the first week of June, have many quality workouts under their belt and are actually taking this weekend off from racing.

“Their strong placing in the elite divisions at the Marcus and Southlake Carroll meets definitely have us excited. I feel they will compete well at Paschal on Sept. 21 and  will be ready to make a charge for a back-to-back district championship.”

Comstock added that his girls’ team possesses quality depth, something which is essential in a tough competitive landscape.

“In our region you have to expect a lot out of your whole team,” Comstock said.

“The top four girls’ teams in our region last year all placed in the top five at state. It’s hard to have a weak link and compete at a high level. On the girls’ side we have two returning state qualifiers from last year in senior Sadie Tharp and sophomore Olivia Christmas. Sophomore Ella Pando has placed right behind Olivia in our first two meets and has looked very impressive.

“Returning sophomore Diana Antonio is running strong and our newcomer to the sport, sophomore Ashley Carlisle might be our biggest surprise yet. They have both performed well in elite races.

“Sophomore Emma Morsch and graduating junior Elaine Scott round out the team [having earned] big PR’s to start the year.”

Weatherford’s boys finished 32nd out of 35 qualifying teams at the Southlake Carroll Invitational.

The Roos’ individual results are:

(Boys’ 5000M Elite Division)

• Ryder Love, 103rd with a time of 17:38.08

• Decklan Murphy, 214th with a time of 18:52.30

• Michael Dinkins, 220th with a time of 18:57.59

• Brandon Watson, 226th with a time of 19:06.03

• Ebake Saidi, 242nd with a time of 19:34.96

Weatherford’s boys’ team benefits from a strong senior class looking to finish their high school running careers on a strong note, Comstock said.

“The guys’ team has four seniors that have a common goal of getting to Lubbock this year,” Comstock said.

“Seniors Ryder Love, Michael Dinkins, Ebake Saide and newcomer Brandon Watson have put in the mileage to have a great year. They are improving every week and should be firing on all cylinders by district.”

Comstock added that the Roos also have a number of capable young runners, any one of whom could have a breakout season.

“Sophomore Noah Kauffmann is definitely our most improved runner and earned a top varsity spot with the mileage he put in this summer,” Comstock said.

“Sophomores Decklan Murphy, Ty Gilliam and Carter High are returning lettermen that round out the squad. All eight have run varsity meets this year. Which runners will be our top seven will depend week to week on who is firing on all cylinders.”

Weatherford competes in the Paschal Invitational Sept. 21.
